Adding missing cities

Hi!
So, I've been working in adding some missing cities, to make the process a little clearer and to progress faster, I'm going to explain my logic here.

First, this is the current status of the population coverage in the game: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/10WzGHugmC1GNWF3IDxA_3M-GQYqBRmD4Sy25RT5vSRY/edit?usp=sharing
Use the gsheets filters if you want to sort stuff differently.
The first step is trying to get the coverage % the same as the income (30 income -> 30% coverage). That is the number is the last column in the sheet, the closer to 0, the better.
After that, I plan on getting the same income countries in the same % coverage range (this is not going to be perfect).

Things to note:
  • The balance isn't perfect. We know. We are trying to fix that.
  • The country rep is related to the income and the population, so, more pop = more rep.
  • We won't be manually adding EVERY city in the world, that isn't possible.
  • Server performance will always be a higher priority than adding cities.
  • There are some problems with different city structures that could result in problems and smaller pops in some cities. (for example, Switzerland and Tokyo).
  • We will try to keep the current power and rep structure, but that may not be possible. We understand that you may not like that some country is now better than when you made your base decision or that some competitor now has an advantage, but such is life.
  • The priority here isn't airports, it's cities, but some missing airports will appear by adding new cities.
  • Any contributions and requests won't be added immediately, it can take some time.
  • Patson (aka, the dev, Air Canada) is the one who gives the go ahead on any new additions/rules. Everything could be vetoed.
  • This isn't for adjustment, it's for adding missing stuff.
Now, this is the public spreadsheet where you can contribute if you want: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zhFNbGlFltVq_GCoGhZPNhywOxcF92d2TwXhIEsGBAE/edit?usp=sharing
You can also see the cities that (maybe) will be added in the next update and the cities already added (2nd sheet).
Don't be a kid, don't mess with the sheet.
When I (or anyone that can make a PR) feel like it,the PR will be made and patson will eventually review/add it.

Any questions, suggestions would be welcome.
This isn't for airport requests.

Also, if you want to ADJUST the size of a city, you can post here and we'll see what could be done.

Cheers!

Pop coverage and missing cities last updated:  06/01/19. Yes my american friend, that is DD-MM-YY
Last population and rep changes:
Saudi Arabia (+ 5.7mi) rep 9.62 -> 12.64
Kuwait (+ 360k) rep 1 -> 1
Israel (+ 1.6mi) rep 1 -> 5.41
Canada (+ 4.7mi) rep 14.87 -> 17.3
France (+ 870k) rep 16.85 -> 17.18
USA (+ 5.8mi) rep 30 -> 30.38

I'll no longer be active and working on this so I've removed the public sheets.
If anyone wants to keep up from where I've left the sheets are available at: https://mega.nz/#!yoNlHCzZ!ekvLYfhgvvba-c4PdQLf81ml3jyZX6sstyuXiWWl1A4 *for idk how long

Thanks for the help everyone!

Hi bluesky, as mentioned in the other thread I'm willing to assist here by adding cities.

Before I start doing big work, I wondered on whether we should maybe define on what definitions and from what sources we add city populations? I see two possible definitions, both with advantages and disadvantages: Populations of municipalities (administrative divisions) or population of urban areas.

Municipalities
+ clearly defined borders
+ clear numbers from censuses
- fragmentation varies greatly between countries (e.g. Europe: An urban area consists often of many municipalities, only a minority lives in the core city (in game: Paris!), e.g. on the other hand Chongquing in China, which covers a huge area with a lot of rural areas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chongqing )

Urban Areas
+ Should ensure that cities are more comparable globaly in game
+ there are fewer, less work
- sometimes unclear definition, numbers
- could encircle several clearly independent cities (e.g. Tokyo & Yokohama)

As you mentioned server performance as an issue, the advantage of urban areas would be, that fewer cities/data points would have to be made.

Then, what source should be used? I found just yesterday this one: http://www.citypopulation.de/ I did not know it before, but it looks professional, with data from all countries, whenever possible from official censuses. It also makes the above mentioned distinctions, depending on the country you can find population numbers on municipalities, districts, urban agglomerations, etc. What do you think?

I would also like to use the urban areas, specially for europeans cities for the same reason you listed.
But the game uses GeoNames (http://download.geonames.org/export/dump/) as the source for these cities, and the source use strictly the municipal borders for population calculation.
Using urban areas would require the update/overwrite of that source data, and patson doesn't allow that. That's why I said that this is mainly for adding cities and not for adjustments.

The quantities of cities isn't really a problem, that is just a list, the problem is the extra calculation needed for the extra passengers, that's where there are huge performance hits.
That's why patson doesn't want to add the 100mi population missing in China, that would increase the pop count by 20%.

The source is not really that important, just try to pick the newer one and steer away from predictions. Even if a source is not great, it shouldn't have huge differences.
That site you linked is awesome, I'll be using it if I ever add anything in the future, thanks!

Thanks for your help!

Ok, thanks for clarifications bluesky! So municipality numbers it is and preferably small countries that need fixing it is, as to not let the global population in game grow too much.

Question: How to handle cities that are existing already, but have numbers that are clearly too low (say e.g. more than 25% off)? Use the same sheet, or would you want a new tab or something?

Just another point - and I say that as someone operating an airline from a wealth 11 country - why the idea that population % should be = income level? Ok, I see the idea that wealthy countries have more airports overall and so more coverage areas to fill. But still, it's already hard enough in low wealth areas, wouldn't it make sense to reach something like 10% in every country?

1. Cities with the wrong pop have the same problem as municipalities, we can't change the source, so they stay as they are.

2. That's for patson to decide.
The pop coverage % == income was my idea btw, it was just a initial target, idk if it's the best solution and since the server can't really handle anything more, that's going to be as good as it gets I guess.

Hey bluesky, I'd be interested to continue work on the cities. Unfortunately what I've already done seems lost, as the sheets you uploaded aren't the most recent ones. I've added cities in Sri Lanka and the Czech Republic for example, who aren't on the uploaded sheet :(

But for me to continue on this, I'd like to know @patson if you are interested in it? Or is server load becoming to big of a trouble?

Sorry, I have no idea why GDrive downloaded such an old version.
I've updated the link with the latest version, sorry!
