Siem Reap, Cambodia (REP) Tourism Charm
« on: April 09, 2019, 05:06:33 pm »
Pushing again for a tourism charm for Siem Reap since someone tried in the past and failed.

1. The IATA code of the airport (JFK, LAX, SFO etc)
REP

2. Proposed charm
The tourism charm for a multitude of reasons. First, REP is the airport that serves Siem Reap and Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is a UNESCO heritage site with over two million visitors a year. In the real world most INTL tourists only visit Cambodia for the site.
Secondly, 24 different airlines serve REP, 18 of which are based outside of the country. Because of the high tourism demand for the city, there are multiple direct flights between REP and major cities. This includes but is not limited to SIN, KUL, TPE, and PEK.
Thirdly, my personal experience with flying out of REP and being in Siem Reap for 5 days. Many of the other backpackers that I met while there flew in and out of REP and visited just for a few days solely because they wanted to visit Angkor Wat. Most of these other backpackers were doing 3+ month backpacking trips and had the time to visit other places in Cambodia but did not. They only wanted to see Angkor Wat. Outside of the backpacking world, there were an obnoxious amount of INTL tourists who just took short couple day trips to visit again solely because of Angkor Wat. Many of which were also traveling on a much higher budget/luxury tourism.
Finally it is important to note that while many of the direct flights from REP go to China, lots of flights also connect to popular tourist destinations (which would also be worth receiving the tourism charm, if they do not have it already). Some notable airports serving major tourist destinations would be Da Nang, Vietnam (DAD), Phuket, Thailand (HKT), Macau (MFM), Luang Prabang, Laos (LPQ), and Sihanoukville, Cambodia (KOS).
Because of all of this, I really want you to reconsider giving REP some tourism charm. I'd like to say the airport really is only there to serve the needs of international tourists. Without Angkor Wat, REP would not be there, or at least be served they way it is.

3. And preferably a wiki link to the corresponding cities that show why it should have such a charm - for example # of tourists visiting that city in a year etc
