Bases?

Can someone tell me what establishing bases does? I thought it would allow me to create flights from that airport but I can't seem to figure it out?

When you are on the plan a flight screen, there is a second symbol next to the departure airport on the top right. Click on it and you can choose from the cities you got a base in. Also you get more slots when you build a base.
