I agree that time will tell and you have made a great game so far and I believe will keep being great :)

Just saw your non-gateway bases and later in-game it is interesting you will get the "niche" instead of a big competition.

I did 2 tests to see how the Gateway can influence creating a new flight. I liked the results, you have to focus on your markets instead of flying everywhere, just felt the Gateway is "overpowered".

Example to a country with no relationship
LIS - BSB (Alliance base but no gateway, difficulty = 10,81)
LIS - GIG (No base but Gateway, difficulty = 8,53.
LIS - NAT (No base, no gateway = 14,30)

Example to a country with a relationship
LIS - MIA (No Base, Gateway, diff =2,76)
LIS - DFW (Alliance Base, No gateway, diff = 2,13)
LIS - VPS ( No Base, No Gateway = 4,16)

Let's give it some time.

I personally like to set up base in non-gateway airport cause gateway airport is going to be always crowded

The problem I see with the "Gateway airports" is that it protects the big airports, even in the long run, it will be easier (negotiations) to choose a Gateway vs non-gateway.

Irl many small airports (underserved) would love new foreign airlines. And in the game, it could be easier to fly to non-gateway African airports, instead of investing in the same markets.

In V2 today, JFK and LHR are Top2 due to the "favorite" Gateway airport. I think without Gateway we could have more competition.

If the goal is to limit IC flights or/and protect home markets, I understand but I feel it is protecting main airports.

Give it some time. The plan is some more dedicated airlines will eventually archive privileged status

I think the idea of gateway airports is flawed. It makes all airlines fly to the same one or few airports in a country while other airports remain underserved. If you want a more varied route network, you should open up all airports for setting up routes.

Therefor I propose to leave this like it is in V1, namely all airports open to start routes. V2 is an improvement in many ways, but gateway airports are not one of them.
